Bip-39 Technology Explained:

1.The Official List of 2048 BIP‑39 Words

he BIP‑39 standard is based an official list of 2048 words available in several languages (English, French, Spanish, and others).

These words were ‑defined in advance: They are arranged alphabetically.They are also numbered from 0 to 2047 in that alphabetical order..Each word was assigned the number of its position in the official BIP‑39 list.

This number is then automatically converted into an 11‑bit binary code That binary code corresponds directly to the word’s index in the list and is therefore unique for each word.

As you can see, the words are simply a human‑friendly way to represent a predefined number. They make it easier for us to remember complex information that would otherwise be just a long string of 0 and 1.

2.Why 2048 words?

There are exactly 2048 words in the BIP‑39 list, because with 11 bits you get every possible combination of 0 and 1. Each combination maps to a unique word.

Think of it like the martingale matingale in gambling:

• 1 bit → 2 possibilities
• 2 bits → 4 possibilities
• 3 bits → 8 possibilities
• 4 bits → 16 possibilities
• …
• 11 bits → 2048 possibilities

👉 Just like in a casino: every time you add a bit, the number of combinations doubles. That’s why the list has 2048 words: one word for every possible combination, with none missing.

3. From Entropy to Words

To create a 12‑word key, remember that each word represents 11 boxes, each filled with either a 0 or a 1 — that’s 132 boxes (bits) in total.

Imagine you sit at your computer and press two keys at random: the 0 key and the 1 key, exactly 128 times.

👉 Result: you get a long sequence of 128 digits made only of 0 and 1. This is what we call entropy

Then, this sequence is verified:

• A special calculation called SHA‑256 is applied.
• We take the first 4 digits of the result (which are also just 0 and 1). These 4 digits are called the checksum
• We add them at the end, making a total of 132 digits.

We then split this sequence into 12 groups of 11 digits. Each group corresponds exactly to a word in the official list of 2048 words.

👉 Bottom line: When you read a 12‑word seed phrase, you are actually reading 132 keystrokes of 0 and 1 on an invisible keyboard.

Now that you have your 12 words, you can use them in any wallet. From there, it is the wallet or wallet provider

that generates the different addresses for each blockchain (Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, Solana, etc.), following what are called derivation paths.

I won’t go into the details of these derivations here; I will cover them in my upcoming training sessions and future blog posts.

For now, just remember that your 12 words are enough: the rest is automatically handled by the wallet you choose.
